Since April 2020, the Office of the Inspector of Prisons has been collaborating with two academics from Maynooth University on a project to listen to people who are cocooning in custody, and establish how to support these persons and minimise the harm they experience as a result of the public health measures. This briefing aims to provide insight into how people in custody experienced cocooning and presents a range of practical suggestions emerging from the project partners’ analysis of the data, and from a review of their early findings and ideas at an online stakeholders’ roundtable on 25th June.
